Customer Segmentation Analysis
Predictive analytics for targeted marketing
Customer Segmentation for Arvato Financial Solutions
A comprehensive customer segmentation analysis project that identifies individuals most likely to respond to targeted marketing campaigns for a German mail-order company.
Project Overview
This project applies machine learning techniques to solve a real-world business problem: optimizing marketing efforts by identifying the most promising potential customers. Working with Arvato Financial Solutions, a Bertelsmann subsidiary, I developed a model that can predict which individuals are most likely to become customers in response to a direct mail campaign.
Methodology
The project involved several key steps:
- Data Preprocessing: Cleaning and transforming complex demographic datasets containing hundreds of features
- Exploratory Data Analysis: Identifying patterns and relationships within the customer and general population data
- Dimensionality Reduction: Applying PCA to manage the high dimensionality of the feature space
- Customer Segmentation: Using K-means clustering to identify distinct customer segments
- Predictive Modeling: Building and optimizing a supervised learning model to predict response probability
- Model Evaluation: Assessing model performance using appropriate metrics for imbalanced classification
Key Findings
The analysis revealed several important insights:
- Distinct demographic profiles exist among the company’s current customers
- Significant differences were identified between the customer base and the general population
- Certain customer segments showed substantially higher response rates to marketing campaigns
- Age, income, and specific purchasing behaviors were strong predictors of conversion probability
Business Impact
The developed solution provides Arvato with a powerful tool to:
- Optimize marketing budget allocation by targeting high-probability prospects
- Reduce customer acquisition costs through more efficient campaigns
- Increase conversion rates by tailoring marketing messages to specific segments
- Improve overall return on marketing investment
Technologies Used
- Python for data processing and modeling
- Scikit-learn for machine learning algorithms
- Pandas and NumPy for data manipulation
- Matplotlib and Seaborn for visualization
- XGBoost for gradient boosting implementation
